There are two common methods used to mix concrete at construction sites: manual mixing and machine mixing.
For manual mixing the gauge box that is of the volume of 1 bag cement is used for measuring the volume of the constituent materials of the concrete. And the method is suitable for manufacturing no more than M25 grade of concrete as per the available nominal mix proportion. As per the required volume each constituent material is measured and required amount of water is added. Then the materials are mixed until a homogeneous mixture is obtained using spade and shovel.
Tips on hand mixing:
Provide an impervious platform.
Mix measured quantity of sand and cement uniformly and spread this mixture over measured quantity of course aggregates, again mix it thoroughly until uniform color is obtained.
Make a heap out of this mixture and create a hollow at the centre to pour water.
Add water in small quantities; Mix it over and over again till the mix becomes homogeneous.
Add extra 10% of cement.
For machine mixing, the concept of weigh batching is adopted, with the help of graduated load cells fitted with the batching plant each material is weighed and mixed with machine for preparing the concrete.Firstly,the mixer tank is cleared properly. Then the coarse aggregate is filled as per the proportion, next fine aggregate, later the cement and whole of them allowed for dry mixing. After homogeneous mixing and uniform colour then water is added. For some special applications, the admixtures may be added to the concrete mixture too. And different admixtures have different functions.
